Misleading cartoon

Embassy of India

Dear Editor,

The cartoon carried on the front page of the Post (Jan 2) regarding the alleged encroachment by India in the Susta area of Nepal is not only misleading but also in very poor taste, reminiscent more of the gutter press than the objective and respected newspaper that you doubtless want to be.The scientific mapping of 98 percent of the India-Nepal border by the governments of India and Nepal has been completed. The remaining 2 percent, which includes Susta, is being addressed at the technical and diplomatic levels by the two governments, which are committed to maintaining the status quo and tranquility in the area. The question of “encroachment” on “Nepali land” does not arise since the border in Susta is yet to be delineated. It is unfortunate that vested political interests in Nepal have chosen to disturb the peace and vitiate the friendly relations between the two countries by recklessly engaging in anti-India rhetoric, ignoring the facts presented by their own government. These facts have been acknowledged clearly in the press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Nepal on December 28, 2007.The prime minister of India, a leader and scholar respected the world over, presides over a government that has done, and continues to do, its utmost to help Nepal materially, politically and diplomatically through the difficult transition phase that Nepal is going through. In the context of India’s principled foreign policy and its determination to help Nepal and its people in every way through the transition to a democratic, peaceful and prosperous nation, we can only assert that we will continue this policy, ignoring attempts to garner cheap popularity as exemplified by the yellow journalism on display on the front page of your paper of January 2, 2008. We sincerely hope that this does not reflect The Kathmandu Post’s editorial objective for the new year.

Gopal BaglaySpokesman,

Embassy of India Kathmandu

    Rajesh Dai,

Excellent! Although I’m not the judge, but I have awarded this cartoon as Cartoon of the Month due to its message and Satire to the government authority for their silence in such a encroachment in Nepaese territories!

I am so glad that you are spreading THE right information among the public-also known as ‘disable ppl’ in one of the Maha’s series.Continues update regarding any sort of intervenation on our motherland should be publicized immediately so that we can give these ‘goats-baliko boka’-the current India-ism politicians will get some lessons and will strive to do something about it.Indeed it is to be noted that these politicians drank the potion(as mentioned in Rip Van Winkle’s story) given by India and they are still fast asleep and work under only the authority of India. We, teh current generation, should speed up our motivation and spread the right knowledge-the true democracy not the democracy under In..dia.We also should involve in active poilitics so as to replace these aged-politicians who still think time’s not right for anything and still reign under 2007 BS policies which we know are already been scrapped and should be dumped.New era should be begun with true enthusiasm of nationality and unity of our country.Fresh plans and policies are indoubtedly required to fight for any kind of authotarian rule that is being plagues by our current “totally illiterate’ politicians who are more or less ‘coward ‘and work under somebody’s direction-they do not have morale nor any sort of self-image that can undermine authotarian rule.We-just like u _mr. rajesh KC, should be brave enough to come forward and ply against any sort of foreign intervention in our country. Where there is a will, there is a way-so there is an exit. Maybe-why should we totally rely on India-we do have northern neighbour who wants to do a lot to us..why not go for…some CHANGE?

  6. A Good wisher of bilateral relations. says:

    Appreciate Indian Embassy’s reaction.
But would like to highly point to the facts that Indian Government had failed to maintain the deepest relations between our two countries in the way that the bunds and dams accross the border to inundate Nepali land built in local level of India, everytime dismantling and shifting of the border sub-pillars of Nepal-India border by Indian SSB and encourage thousands of people to capture Nepali land on the backing of SSB and bargain “status quo”.

Local Indian authorities have dominating attitude towards Nepal and Nepali and that had been proved by not only Susta and Kalapani, but also in many other places like Bardiya district of Nepal.

Real good friendship is justified when the central government in India will address appropriately the Laxmanpur Dam that is inundating Nepali land after it’s construction, Mahalisaagar dam, Khurdlotan and many more to mention which is inundating Nepali Land along the border. Had there been any example that India had sincerely addressed such matters and resolved them in a manner that Nepali side had not been in loss? Where is Kalapani issue?

When Indian politicians in Bihar and UP promise to make land availabel to their poor voters and forcefully cultivate the land being owned by Nepalis along the border is not politically motivated? Doesn’t the local governmenbt there belong to India? Doesn’t the SSB belong to India and their attitude and behaviour not representative of India?
Is international law followed by India on these issues while dealing with issues that are related to and affecting Nepal?

Well, if Bagleyji’s statements are to represent the true Indian Government’s views, please first clear out the old Indian Mentality of British Colonial age and stand with the new broad vision of mutual respect, mutual benefit, equality in existance and basic diplomatic (not conemanship) norms and revisit the issues. Accept the true meaning of bilateral relations and act accordingly. It’s not bilateral relation when the stronger always tries to bully the weaker.

The greatness lies on accepting wrong doings and correcting them, but not trying to cover up the wrong doings by Indian local or central administration and wrong concepts that are there to really win the heart and mind of your neighbour. Otherwise it will be only a baseless out-cry of “Anti Indianism in Nepal” by Indian authorities.

I’ve deep respect to Primeminister Manmohan Singh. Cartoonist Rajeshji should have put the SSB in the cartoon instead of the PM himself. Nepali cartoonist had to accept it as well, but the border security represents the national policy, thus the head of the nation to be shown on the cartoon is not to blame him personally, but representation of the side with that attitude. I believe Bagleyji will also undestand this basic practicality.

    Thanks!

This refers to Gopal Baglay’s response to the Post cartoon (“Misleading Cartoon,” Letters to the Editor, Jan 4). His letter is misleading. The cartoon is so vivid and poignant about the Indian encroachment in Nepal. But Wagley has viewed it with the perspective of an Indian invader and he doesn’t think it seriously.

India has showed insincerity towards the sentiment of the Nepalis. It has been taking the advantage of incapability of our leaders. The issue aroused is not due to the vested political interests of Nepalis but because of Indian encroachment.

There is evidence of encroachment in the Susta area. If you don’t trust the news coming forth you are requested to visit the area.

I would also like to ask Baglay about the Laxmanpur dam and other dams constructed unilaterally by India. Are all these issues baseless?

We request all Indian officials to show respect toward the Nepali people’s sentiments. We want to view India as a true friend.

Nothing more to say as most of the readers have already responded pretty well to the cartoon. Three cheers and hats off to Rajesh ji for bringing out such a sensitive issue in such a nice manner. No doubt it provoked Indian Embassy but then truth is what is in the cartoon. We want India to remain a good neighbour and ourselves want to be good as well. Hope to see better picture of India as well………may be in my life time………

  14. KIRAT - BRITAIN says:

Well done to whom I respect and support Mr, Puskal Jee, Mr, Bhojraj, Ms/Mrs, Santi, Mr, Bishnu, Mr, Budhinarayan and as well as BRAVE Editor of Kantipur who published the fact daily routine (since long time) of every day and night who always promised his self, a very best neighbour hood for Nepal. I think, this is the right time to sacrifice our live better with a hunger die not to leak whom spite to us for live. But we (Nepali people) know our country’s be loved LEADERS does not want do it. So this is the time to strike every single Nepali people’s mind, the country does not changed and develop by the leaders the fact is PEOPLE. The country’s power is to be in people’s hand not in the leaders. That is why? If some one signalled you to advantage, of course, that is the main cause of Nepal.

  15. Shirish Lamichhane/Louisiana(U.S) says:

Truly appreciable effort by Rajesh dai. Nepal’s political instability wants some settlement, not the encroachment. India claims to be the oldest neighboring nation of Nepal in all regards. It is pleasing sometimes to know that India has helped Nepal in many ways. However, it is equally disappointing to see the vivid encroachment of India into Nepal’s territories. May be India wants Nepal’s territories in return for some help offered to Nepal. It’s totally ridiculous. I wish Nepal could sustain itself without any Indian infringement but this scenario would only be hypothetical as for now. India knows Nepal’s dependence upon it and hence keeps on playing with Nepal’s politics and people’s lives.

India should keep in mind that even Nepal looks small and unstable at this moment, INFRINGEMENT AND ENCROACHMENT OVER OUR MOTHERLAND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AT ALL!!!

  16. Bipin Pokharel. Dammam/KSA says:

The story of Mr. Gopal Bagle, Spokesman, Embassy of India is completely meaningless and humorous too. Everybody knows how much land we have lost in Terai because of Indian encroachment.
The root meaning of this cartoon is very serious to Nepal and now we all Nepalese has to wake up to get back our looted land.
Mr. Bagle, it is universal proof that TRUTH WILL BE ALWAYS BITTER. So please…………….

    Well done Rajesh Dai.

    Regards,
    Bipin.

  17. Sanu/Sydney says:

Baglay’s response is like “not seeing buffalo in one’s own body while seeing louse in the other’s” accusing Kantipur of yellow and gutter journalism. Kantipur is a baby compared with the champions of yellow and gutter journalism routinely peddled by the Indian broadsheets (most behave like tabloid) e.g. the Times of India in relation to matters related to Nepal. Never heard any complains from Mr Baglay about that lately! Why such double standard Mr Baglay?

Also, he routinely uses patronising and snobbish language in Nepali media which I find utterly abhorring.

  18. Deshbhakta says:

    Well done Rajesh Ji,

This sounds too undemocratic for a big country like India to pretend not to understand as to what the cartoon is trying to pass the sort of message on to all the concerned people. Do not understand why they cannot digest cartoon like these!

Rajesh Ji, please keep up the good work! Do not give up! You have every Nepali’s support!

  19. Anil-Australia says:

Salute and hats off!!! rajeshji. That’s what I consider as a true courage and spirit of journalism. Bravo!!! Since my childhood I have always hated indian policy regarding borders. Mahakali River, Sharada Barage , Laxmanpur Dam, Tanakpur, Tukucha etc all these are the examples of the wicked policy and inner desire of India.

of course, i would agree with this cartoon, as it is true and factual ones. Because of india encroachment in nepali soil, there had been lots of problem to nepali people…in sheltering, foodingand even basic rights of nepali. so with this cartoon, both nepaii and indian government will open their eyes and try to solve in best ways……….otherwise may be it will be one more problem too both nepal and india.
so what indian embassy think? is it false?
when i was young, iread nepali area as 147181 sq.km but now as 130000sq.km, where is remaining land? does it lost itself or india engulf it?

  21. nepali ,mn usa says:

it might be simple cartoon but it has lots of meaning on it.The cartoon not only reflect the present condition of susta but the numerous act that had done by Delhi government to our country. *** why don’t they simply accept their fault and leave the alleged encroached place.

  23. Shyam/china says:

    TRUTH
It’s truth. If Indian Embassy has any doubt, i request them to visit the site. Besides this i want to request Government of Nepal to act responsibly on this issue. Time to time such time type of news are coming…. it should need immediate investigation.

  24. SB, Delhi says:

I am a Nepali student in India. As a Nepali i’ ve faced many harassments in India. And in my class I make anti-Indian comments and I have argued many a times with my collegues. And as a proof i used to use ekantipur.com and your cartoons. No one can understand Nepal/Nepali unless he/she is a Nepali. Therefore, being a Nepali I am all time supporter of this cartoon any campaign that are for Nepal.

The comment by Indian Embassy is another sequence of funny and nonsense statements*** They always want to cover this up by saying long history, relation, a major donar etc. But in fact India has taken those advantages from Nepal which it can never be fulfilled by any means. Eg: All those Treaties of which India took advantages of politcal unrest in Nepal. So I am very thankful to Rajesh KC for this art which can wake the Indian government who has a habit of eating Nepali lands time and again like Tanakpur, Koshi Barrage and preparing for another meal like SUSTA.

    Dear Nepaleese friends,

Please do not worry. The Indian mentality is not of hegemony. Its true that we as a country are bigger than you, but no matter how powerful we become, we are a soft state and we believe in live and let live.

I would like to accept that encroachment may have taken place and these could be the handiwork of locals and local politicians who think in a selfish way. The Indian leadership at the top is not like that. As with all form of governance, it gets murky as you go down the order.

I would strongly like the Nepal government to raise this issue at the highest level. Everything will be sorted out soon. there is no use talking to local leaders in UP or Bihar. Please do not do that. They will think in a narrow sphere.

thanks to Rajesh ji for publishing this cartoon.

and I felt sad a bit that it showed our PM Manmohan Singh there. but its okay.

i want to request all of you to not spread anti- india feelings all through. this could be dangerous because people easily get influenced by these things and do not see the big picture.

the big picture is that we will remain friends.

    hope we remain friends,

  27. Xelofy, Kathmandu says:

Bravo Ashish… Well our relationship with India is very good if we talk about person to person relationship. For centuries we have leaved together in peace and harmony. This is poor policies/incapable politicians be it from Nepal or UP & Bihar who are working to deteriorate the relationship between us.
SB, I agree that few Indian people want to show off… Forget about Nepal… I had one Indian friend who believed that Singapore too is a part of India and its name earlier was Singhapur. I have studied in India and I have found many good people over there… though I’ve not met Ashish, but I think he falls in the same group… I believe that Susta problem will be solved soon as India is being led by Scholar like Manmohan Singh and not by people like Prachanda or Prabhakaran. It is only a matter of time.
For all good Indians… We are sorry to hurt your feelings…. to all ill hearted Indians… Balls to you guys…
    We definitely will remain friends…

    Dear Rajesh Dai!

From that cartoon we got the chance of the real intention of India. The government of India and spokeperson of the Embassy forget the past history of India. In the past India is a colony of British, Nepal is not like that, now Nepalese people never against the neighbours, but the intention of India is not that. India wants political crisis in south asia.

The cartoon is fact and truth to show the sustha of Nepal. The Kathmandu Post is great news paper of the Nepal.

    Keep it up.

Yes definately the Nepali government shouldn’t linger discussing to local state government because every Indian knows the condition of law and order in that state. And the capacity and intention of local leaders to solve the issue.

  36. manish shreshtha, kathmandu says:

Such Cartoons hamper the peace in nepal. this type of cheap press stunts to gain popularity should be stopped immediately. kantipur should be ashamed of misleading the public.

  37. Krishna/Kathmandu says:

    Manish,
It doesn’t look like to me to be an attempt for popularity by either the cartoonist KC or by Kantipur rather to aware the public about Susta situation and how India has tried to encroach on the territory. Perhaps, you should read about the issues affecting people in that area and you will come to understand that the situation is actually real and cartoonist has done a great job therefore. We need to atleast have a debate on such issues. General public are not aware of whats happening behind the scenes on Govertment negotiations. And now you can see the reaction it has generated. By flatly declaring this to be cheap, you seem to be rather dispersed on such issues. I hope you agree that the cartoon has tried to atleast create some thinking in the part of the Governmental authorities to try to solve this problem as quickly as possible for the betterment of both nations.
Btw Rajesh KC is a celebrated cartoonist in Nepal and has given a lot to society for him to come to this point of cheap popularity.
    Best!

  38. Raj/USA says:

    Great cartoons Mr. K.C.

The best feedback should be posted on the newspaper, so the general people also can see what Nepalis around the world are saying.
    Thanks
    Keep it up good work.

so you are right at all.

  41. anupam/ india says:

very mean from nepaleese… if somebody is tired, you would even let him sit peacefully. so what.. is some part of his body falls in your territory.

do we ever question when hordes of nepaleese come into our territory and keep on demanding for gorkhaland and create all such nonsense.

we must stop all assiatance to you guys… close our borders.. we do not need you anyways.

you guys just want to eat our cake and have it too… how selfish….

  42. dhruba & sharmila London says:

do you have a neighbour from hell?

    well, we have!

  43. don thiomas/Tibet says:

***It is a shame that Nepalis regard these border issues as more important than loss of freedom and democracy by the collection of self appointed halfminds calling themselves the Nepalese Government.

We have no electricity, we have no water, we have no oil and gas, and we have a dangerous bunch of gangsters***, issues that should be at the top of the action list in Nepal. Instead this gang of unelected lawmakers bleat like sheep about getting rid of the King to protect their jobs for the future, and holding elections, in which decisions have already been made in advance to the tune of the *** Mao Party policies.

I don’t care about the border issues. Nepal is a failed State on the point of collapse, which makes border issues of no importance.

  44. Mohmad, Berlin says:

    Hello Anupam,

Do u really want to argue in this issue or r u writing in half sleeping condition??
dont worry, there might be slow but relentless development of anti india thinking in Nepal the you will come to know you need Nepalese or not.
Because of your narrow mentality, you guys are facing problems with pakistan, Bangaladesh and China.
Nepalese people are calm, quit and hospitable and dont forget they have glow of fire inside them , a glow which has far more intensity than those of Pakistani friends and chinese friends.
Last but not least, we are leaving in a 21st century, IT age and knowledge based economy and of course in reality of globalisation…..awareness level of nepalese is quite high. and of cousre, it not the big beating the small one but it is the fast beating the slow one.

Thanks to Rajesh Jee, of course.

  46. anupam/ india says:

    hello mohmad from Berlin,

its good that india is finally doing what it should do. after cuddling pakistan, bangladesh and china for long, india is finally matching stick with stick. Its a great change and I welcome it. Call it narrow mindedness or whatever.. enough is enough…. pakistan and bangladesh and china do not deserve the kind of trustworthy treatment they have been getting so far.

as far as Nepal is concerned, yes… I take back my comments. We have a soft corner for nepal… and I am sorry to all nepali about the comment I wrote. I apologize to you all. I had got infuriated because the comment above mine talked about cutting the leg of our PM. this is the stuff that was written “CHOR KO KHUTTA KAT BHANDA KINA KHUTTO UCHALNE”

theres only a limit to which you can match indecency with decency.
I have no problem trying to stoop down and win back nepali trust.

Do not expect the same treatment for pakistan, bangladesh or china.

    thanks

  47. anupam/ india says:

    To nepali ppl,
I am sorry, I apologize and take back the comment I wrote few blocks above. I am sorry to have hurt you and we believe, this issue gets solved with each party getting their territory.

we have no interest in troubling nepal. nepal is the only country that has given its blood for our well being. we vividly remember the sacrifices of soldiers in our Gurkha regiment.

india is yours. pls come into our territory and enjoy. you r welcome.
    thanks

  48. Amrit Rai/Kathmandu says:

India and Nepal relationship is the relationship of two neighbours in a village:one very rich and well to do, another very poor and entwined in domestic problems. It’s not difficult to understand what relations will there be between these two neighbors. In stead of accusing India for frequent encroachment and other stuffs it will be wise to see once, the capability, mentality and attitude of our leaders first. Due to which, India has easy infiltration in our politics, land and so on. land encroachment of course, is a very serious matter that lets the boiling hot blood flow all over our mind and body. Though, before we make any mistake we, the Nepalese people must be capable enough to teach lessons to our leaders who have already failed to hold CA Election for two times due to their mere personal ego. Therefore, what more can we expect from them in the context of protecting our sovereignty.
Finally, a humble warning to India is that, no matter how traitors our leades become, do not try to take over advantage! we are still the Brave Gorkhas! and have not forgotten the lessons of ‘using Khukuries’ that our ancestors have taught us.

  49. k p Dahal/Pokhara says:

i see nepal india relation as between two sisters, one BIG sister and the other little cute sister. Now the thing is , BIG sister doesn’t give the little sister her share of chocolate. The little sister fights, hits the BIG sister and gets upset and cries..

… and then the BIG sister says .. kuchi kuchi kuchi … ha ha… and finally gives her the chocolate.

How about getting your arse out of Susta rather than wasting your valuable time refuting cartoons and reports? If your government stopped encroaching upon Nepali land–inhabited and cultivated by people with Nepali deed papers and paying taxes to the government of Nepal–then there wouldn’t be this cartoon nor any other report to that effect. Nor would you have to run after different people, institutions, and publication venues to deny what is as true and clear as the broad daylight sun.
Does that make sense to you, bhaiya?

  58. ashish/ atlanta says:

    dear nepali friends,

I urge you all to not make this a central issue. This will get solved the day summit level talks are held.

there are important issues coming up. In recent times I have seen that the major headlines in nepal newspaper is all about … Monarchy and Maoism.

First of all. monarchy is a dead issue. If you have stripped it of all its powers, its irrelevant to talk about it. But all your 7 parties r wasting time on this.

And I request all nepali people to defeat maoism. Please do not vote for them.

I also fear for the people of Bihar and UP. if Maoists come to power they will encourage Maoists in Bihar and elsewhere in India. Please defeat them.

Also, please promote capitalism in your country. And focus on economic development. Fate of a lot of poor Indians living in Bihar and UP hangs on a Nepal that could be economic powerhouse. I know some of my uncles commute from Sitamadhi in Bihar to Kathmandu for their livelihood.

So its no point talking who is rich or poor.. we are both poor. Lets focus on development. Please defeat Maoists.

    thankyou

And regarding with case of land, it is 100 and more then 100% true.

  61. madhav sharma london says:

  62. Amrit Rai/Kathmandu says:

    Dear Ashis!

Thanks for your comment indeed, you already seem to be a NRI living an American life and don’t know the facts and realities over here, your story of two sisters seems to be ‘once upon a time there were two sisters bla bla bla”, are you going to tell me a childish story over this serious issue? I am always of the opinion that bilateral issues between India and Nepal should not be turned into a hostility. However, overindulgence of Indian government in our internal matter is not acceptable. You know what your elder sister does? She keeps a chocolate on one hand and takes whatever she can from the younger sister by another hand. you don’t seem matured enough to understand the fact over here and of course, my dear Ashsih bhai don’t ever be willing to taste the taste of Khukuries,,,,,, because none of our enemies have ever been able to taste it literally.
anyway thanks again for ur comment.

  63. Himalal, Sydney says:

    dear editor,
I condenm the clarification from spokesman of the indian embassy. in fact, the cartoon published in kantipur represents the real position of india on the encroachment of nepali land in susta and kalapani area. kantipur is loyal and responsible to more than 25 million nepali people not to the foreign policy of indian government. I do respect the indian pm as a scholor and respected leader but can not tolerate the encroachment our land. we welcome the help and support form indian government but not at the cost of our land which is dearer than our lives.

  64. ashish/ atlanta says:

    amrit dai,

some points that i would like to make:

    1. Being a NRI does not mean you r out of touch with your region. You know more about your region only after you go out of it. Its just like you know more about planet earth, by looking at pictures from the sattelites.

    2. Regarding the over indulgence of India into nepal affairs :: well 80% of people in India will not even know how to figure out Nepal on the map. We are not really occupied with Nepal much. The average public in India heard last about Nepal when there was this Royal Massacre. So if you think that government in Delhi really sits behind closed doors and chalks out a plan to annexe Nepali land, then sorry, we don’t really have time for that.

On the contrary India was being criticized by international community for not really doing much when Nepal was facing the democracy movement turmoil.

So, what you see as a **Serious** issue and term it as one of our game plans, is nothing but sort of an abberation at local level. Shifting the border pillars from here to there is a local abberation, not our national policy. And its hard to drill morality into all the people living along the borders.

ours in a porous border, unmanned at various places… so this means we r really close to each other.. and wherever you have closeness, occasional hostilities are bound to happen. this border issue is just one of those. Nothing much.

    3. My story about sisters was really childish, but being childish does not mean its not valid. I mean thinking of Nepal, its like we relly dont get a hostile feeling, but one of love and affection.

What I do not like about nepal is how they interpret us. Suppose if the govt in delhi wants to send to nepal a gift box. But the postman from india is really un friendly. Then you nepalis will interpret India in terms of the behaviour of postman, and not by the Person who sent you the gift. Thats where the problem lies.

and your khukuries… dont worry.. none of your enemies will ever taste it literally, because you do not have any enemy !

    thats it.

  65. ravii/arkansas u.s says:

excellent job.. hats off to urs creativity.. this is the real picture of the neighbouring country.. kepp on doing the job .. we really appreciate it .

  66. Krishna/Kathmandu says:

“80% of people in India will not even know how to figure out Nepal on the map”. “The average public in India heard last about Nepal when there was this Royal Massacre”.

So you are saying 700 million people in India donot know what country is right across the border? Eventhough that is horrendous understatement and don’t believe that Indians are that dumb as you portray. I mean, I always found it to be ridiculous when Americans donot know where Nepal is, but this is just out of whack.

And as per your point, more than 70% of Americans believed Saddam had everything to do with 9/11. It has, and always have been, Governements around the world’s policy to keep public in dark and initiate their propaganda. Not everything you know means its not being done. Get the drift?

  67. madhav gautam university of akron, OHIO, USA says:

    Dear Rajesh Ji!

i am sure you have dona very very good job. The way India is coming down to Nepal can be seen, observed and anlyzed by the cartoon published on the day. I know the indian embassy is preety aware of what they are doing and how they are interfering on the development of our country. This is why they have reacted so quick.

I like your cartoon since i was in nepal and still love it. good job. kantipur daily has to be proud of you like worker and a better cartoonist to have.
    god bless everyone

  68. ashish/atlanta says:

yeah.. its true…. I will not refute this fact….we r not much obsessed with Nepal.

Its like… its okay… hardly any bdy would open up a newspaper page that has Nepal news.

Nepal mainly matters for people living in the upper reaches of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh , Bengal and Assam.

But you shoud not be hurt by this fact. Our country is not homogeneous. Like for instance people from Rajasthan, do not know much about Tamilnadu or Nagaland and vice versa. They r all busy with their own lives !

But what should matter for Nepal is the fact that those who know you, care for you. Those who do not know are indifferent.

I can say this because I have spent a great deal of time living at places as diverse as Darbhanga, Sitamadhi, madhubani, Bombay and bangalore.

Now I live in America, but my office mates have problem pointing India on map 🙂 So I politely tell them… here it is. And they r glad. They r not anti-india.

Likewise the bottomline is, there is noting like anti-nepal in india.

  69. ashish/atlanta says:

    for krishna !

ha ha.. okay I agree.. its one of our major goals to annexe all nepali territory. Infact it was one of the major poll issue flanked by BJP and the Congress. And infact the Congress came to power at center by promising to people that in next few years all nepali land will be annexed.

    happy now !

I mean an average Indian would burst out in laughter if you say something like this.

HI Rajesh dai dheri dheri subhakamana u’r cartoon it is the exact role of india ,
we all know that india donot want’s to see a complete peaceful nepal and india is always not in favour of nepal,, iam also the residence of rupandehi i know how they want to discard the terai region of nepal . so every one should know that this kind of bihaviour of india and every one should do something about that from their place. thank you verymuch .

  71. Amrit Rai/Kathmandu says:

    Dear Aashis Bhai!

Thanks a lot for your another comment that is endowed with much understanding. The story of encroachment of our land will anyhow be dealt diplomatically no matter how much ever we put our ideas over it. Our discussion is merely based on our nationlistic sentiments. Well, you are right, we do not have our enemies in the world and don’t want to make any as we believe in social harmony, living together hand in hand. I also have the same sentiment, I am not blaming Man Mohan Singh, as I am nothing in front of a scholar as such. You know far better about your country than me obviously. But my brother, what will be your response if I tell you that Lal Killa lise in Kathmandu,,,,, what will be your idea if I tell you Taj Mahal lies in Pokhara,,,, and what will be ur expression if I tell you Mahatma Gandhi was born in Surkhet of Nepal????
U know I was in Qatar in 2005, there was an Indian friend of mine, an electronics engineer from Kochin, South India, he proudly used to say that Mt. Everest lies in Darjeeling district of India, Lord Buddha was born in Bihar and is an Indian, and so on,,,,,,,(seriously) U know chewing a stone would have been easier than to explain him the fact. So finally I gave up without any quarrel. And, one day very happily and proudly he said Nepal is a province of India, from that day on I talked to him very little. If an engineer, a learned citizen can boast over these false facts, what other lower level government officials and citizens near the borders where our lands have been encroached might think? This is what happens brother Ashish! things are different in high level talks and in ground level. Any way, let’s not make it a topic of quarrel, let’s give pressure to both of our leaders and government officials for scientific calculations and measurements in the border areas wherever are the issues of land encroachment.

    Good Luck!

  72. ashish/ atlanta says:

People are migrating from Nepal to India for work and during Maoist problem at peak there were hordes of jumla/humla people travelling for work to india. And in the same way there are thousands of Indian residing here.

So what would this anti-indian/anti-nepali thing do to us??? Those who’ll suffer are nepali people in India studying/working and vice versa.

C’mon *** learn to love humans everyone here. And well the kind of Indians they have posted here, I’m sure they are either from Bihar or UP, freaking people.

Try at least to pretend to follow your scholarly PM. He might be a great man but it seems you *** never learn eh’? Come join Nepal and other countries towards building a strong South Asia. Present day is the time for this big inter- national congress of countries towards harmony. Be there or be left out!!

  94. Passa/Sydney says:

  96. SURAJ UPRETY-now in florence,alabama says:

I want to appreciate Rajesh bro for his creation. This is the really what India is doing and helps us to give joint effort to oppose their policy towards NEPAL.Thanks to the pulication team for publishing the cartoon

  97. iSHWOR says:

    Rajesh dai,

Really good cartoon, it is the reality of how India has been treating to Nepal. It is now time for all we Nepalese to think about this case and act.

    Ishwor

  98. Prabin/Nepali says:

    Hi Rajesh dai,

In newspaper of our country always the same news which is very hard to digest for the Nepali heart. Kahile kaha bomb blast and Political leader always speak and with out work and wants to be hero infornt of JANTA. But when i see ur cartoon i find reality of Nepal and sometime i am so worried for my JANMA BHUMI.

  99. Bandana/Kathmandu says:

A very serious but true message has been conveyed through cartoon.Atleast i hope it ignites flames in Nepali hearts as to what we are going through being neighbour to country like India.
To sum it all India acts like a “SWEET KNIFE”, Mukh ma Ram ram bagali ma Chura.

  100. John/Minnesota says:

    Very Well done Mr. Rajesh.
I am surprised the way Indian Spokesperson reacted to it.Common you belong to the largest democratic country, don’t you think you are affecting democracy by talking that way?Everyone has rights to projection and i belive Kantipur publications did the right thing.
Let the popele of Nepal do what they want in thier homeland…….and please Indians stop being intruders all the time.
    John

  101. shiva, kathmandu says:

Good Job Rajesh Dai, Really very Nice. Cartoons always shows the real info. in an artistic way.

  102. Vibek, denmark says:

well wagle ji, i think its not true what you are describing to the nepli people, we all well knows what happen in susta…..

  103. Bhim/Kathmandu says:

Much venom has spilt over the vexed issue of border (land encroachment from southern side) between Nepal and India. Remember, we have a long border with China too. The difference is we have never had such a hukabaloo with our northern neighbour. Several reasons proclaim the constancy of such calm among which mutual trust with which our governments have handled the issue surmounts all others. I do not blame India, but there is lack of some important ingredient that makes summit level talks between two neighbours not very meaningful as it leaves one party almost always on the receiving end of odds. Several instances have surfaced over this issue and startlingly not for the first time and not only once on a single issue.

    Homework for Nepali youth:
    1. Ponder on the political and diplomatic acumen of our politicians and bureaucrats who have consistently failed (i repeat failed) to chalk out a master plan on such issues (I mean foreign policy) whereby a solid framework for policy guidelines could have been set. India’s South Block moves on Nerhu’s yardstick whereas our Singa Durbar moves on whims. This creates whirlwinds inside Singa Durbar, anytime, therefore there is neither tekne nor samaune as a cornerstone for guidance when a serious issue as above arises.

    2. We know our economic strengths and weaknesses. Every sub stratum of our society is confronted with challenge of livelihood (demographically, geographically, occupation wise). It is high time we localise our efforts on these strengths and weaknesses so that we can give to our country that solid foundation of innovative hard core economic mantle whereby our politicians and bureaucrats will stop becoming whimsical to our national interests.

    3. Politicians think of the next election whereas statesmen work for the next generation. Bad luck, we had no one for the latter or if we had one we never recognized him. Let us ascertain in the coming assembly polls that we commit ourselves to electing such individuals who can and will work for the next generation. This can be possible only when we have local debates, constituency wise, between candidates and people will be able to gauge the ability of our politicians.

    4. Our press is too centralised in Kathmandu. Reason- financial and political decisions are made in Kathmandu. We communicate only problems. Our strength lies in villages whereas the whole country looks to Kathmandu for dole outs. We the educated youth have seldom gone to our countryside with little ideas that may even carry the potential to transform the country. We have to rethink the level of our social engagement.

All the above (not exaustive though) are interwoven and certainly provide the fabric for a healthy exchange with our neighbours. I too was educated in India to a professional level and I must concede that there is no dearth for positive minded individuals, in fact we find them in plenty.

I believe, the cartoon is reminiscent of a sour feeling of anguish on the utter failure on the part of our politicians, dirty work habits in our bureaucracy, a distorted (crudely imported) system of governance that does not befit our way of living and gross want of social sensitivity in our educated people. It is no doubt an excellent work of the art of expression. Whereat the artist has finished his part of work, thereat starts our responsibility, not only response. By applauding Rajesh Dai, we encourage him to continue illuminate our problems but where is the solid wall of defence that we should have erected to deter our so called enemies from perpetrating the repeated assualts?

Our reactions are only verbal till date. Lamentable. Still lamentable will be the catalogue of human crime if we sit in one corner and howl only to allow the perpetrator continue with carnage. A youth network system that pressurises and forces our politicians including our misguided student leaders to accept what we sincerely believe is the need of the hour.

I read with great interest the mature exchanges between Amrit Dai from Kathmandu and Ashishji from US. The solid pillar of understanding must be on the people to people level. Track II diplomacy is quintessential especially between Nepal and India and that is exactly what is absolutely zero at present.

Sabai ko jai hos ra pahupati nath le hamilai sadbuddhi ko marga ma hidne prerna diun.

  104. Kishor says:

It is nice to hear the acknowledgment from Indian embassy that Susta is nepali territory. I hope India is not trying to capture any inch of Nepali land because it only troubles relationship between the two countries. This kind of sensitive issues should be address in serious manner because it can create a lot of tensions between concerned parties.

  105. Shailesh says:

Words are always sweeter. Even hitler had captivated the german crowd with his mesmerizing speech. but we all know who Hitler is and we also know very well the intentions of India; if not the central government then definately the border authority, which clearly wants to encroach as much Nepali land as possible. So, coving actions with futile words is never enough. Let Indian Emabassy keep this in mind.

  106. Ashish (Nepali), Illinois says:

    Hey All,
This is one good cartoon in a sense that all we Nepalese people are after india as all the rabbits of the jungle are after tiger coz they are big. But in reality that is how it works no matter this is the case of nepal and india or the case of rabbit and tiger in the jungle. If we start blindly following what people say or what K…pur write then we are screwed. We should be able to make an educated critic about what is happening in the site. Looking at the Kantipur cartoon doesn’t give you any facts of the matter. Please look at the fact of the matter, make an educated guess and respond. A cartoon??? Give me a break. I love Nepal and till the last drop of the blood I will try to save it and every Nepali should do so if you want to talk about SUSTA. “Janani Janmabhumischa swargadapi gariyasi”

  107. Yubaraj Bhusal, Kabul says:

It is the total failure of Indian diplomacy in Nepal! Mostly, the Bureaucrats and the conservative bureaucratic machinery is mobilized to deal with the political problems of Nepal. Had the Gujaral doctrine respected by the successive Governments of India, all the neighbouring countries would have extended their support to India in international forums. Unfortunately, India has not been able to maitain cordial relations with any of it neighbours, except Bhutan.

Rather, India has been buldozing Nepal utilizing the ‘purchased’ Nepal’s party-leaders with scholarship (to their children), treatment facilities in Indian hospitals, and finances raised from among the Nepalese consumers.

The construction of several bonds in the border areas, encroachment on Nepalese territory and direct and naked intervention on Nepal’s internal affairs it nothing but India’s hegemonism and imperialistic attitude. The Nationalist forces of Nepal need to think from a national perspective giving up petty political interests.

  108. sateLite / Butwal says:

I havent seen before, such a realistic and true cartoon.

    Good Job Rajesh Bro.

India is our neighbour since hundreds of years but honestly we are so unlucky to have such neighbour.we should maintain tight security system in border and sud implement visa and documentation system to enter both country.

    Thanks
    SateLite

  109. Enlighted says:

gr8 cartoon…. it is required to shout at these fat ass bullies and tell them that their ass belong to their side better keep in place or we will do something about it

  110. Child Of Everest, Bangalore says:

100 % valid issue. No doubt in that.

But we too are to blame. What have we done for Nepal apart from staying in America and writing comments.

Our bigger enemies are poverty and ignorence which should be defeated at any cost and the time has come.

We get hot, very hot then cool down.

Lets get going. Lets point the sinking boat to our home. We still have time.

  111. Susma, Kathmandu says:

MY GOD … WAT A LONG DISCUSSION ON THIS TOPIC … I REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND WHEN EVER IT COMES TO INDIA NEPAL RELATION WHY PEOPLE ACT SO MUCH …..

THE MAIN THING IS .. BEFORE BLAMING OTHERS WE SHOULD LOOK AT OURSELF … ACTULLI WE NEPLEASE PEOPLE ARE NOT THAT STRONG IN THE MATTERS WE SHOULD BE .. MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN POWER AND GOVERNMENT HAVE SOLD OUR COUNTRY (I.E. RITE NOW ARUN III IS ALSO HANDOVERED TO …. U PPLE KNOW) … ARU LAI YESSHMA DOSH DIYERA KAAM NAI CHAIANA .. GOVT OFFICIALS AND NETA HARU ARE NO CAPABLE OF RUNNING THE STATE .. THIS IS OUR WEAKNESS… TILL YOUNG LEADERS WITH NAITIKTA DOSENT STAND TO RUN THE STATE NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN ….

N WE HOPE AS EVER INDIA WILL COPE UP WITH US ….. AS WE ARE CLOSE TO EACHOTHER IN EVERY ASPECTS …..

PLS PEOPLE DONT ARGUE AND MAINTAIN PEACE …

  112. Rahul /biratnagar says:

I am very much pleased that Kantipur/Kathmandu post has rise above the india domination . Its the right of press to higlight the issue. I again back your effort and right to have information.
    thank you
    well done
dont be afraid by the low grade comments , we are back of kantipur/kathmandu post

  113. Susma, Kathmandu says:

Every1 comments according to their own perspective … if everyone had one single perspective then their would have peace in our country not pieces .. therefore we cannot classify anyones comments and grade them .. as we are not professioanl critics yet.. are we ? :()

  114. pradeep fernando, akron, ohio says:

    Dear Rajesh ji,

good job. though i am from srilanka, i have seen your cartoon. when i asked some nepalese guys and tried to find the real onging issues, i came to know that the cartoon nearly reflects everything about what’s going on at the proximity of Indo-Nepal boarder.

I would like to say you all that do not worry, we srilankan are always with you.

    good job
a very nice and realistic cartoon
    you are an international cartoonist.

    Lord Buddha bless us

  115. Ransi,kentucky,USA says:

    For, ashish/Atlanta
Thanks ashish for your cool comments on the topic of a cartoon. I had never thought that any Indian has a good thinking about Nepal. My house is near UP in Nepal. Must of the people from there are entirely different from you. We must keep our friendship and should work for building peace. But remember that there is not only the case of Susta. Many Nepalese had been beaten by Indian SSB force while they were sleeping at night on their own land. If any country tries to occupy part of your country how will u response them? What will your heart says when any Indian people are beaten by Pakistani soldiers in your own Indian land? Everybody loves their motherland. Nobody wants to lose it. So try to feel the feelings of Nepalese towards their motherland being a Nepali .but i appreciate your some points like, to be friend and stay in calm. As we are neighbors we must help each other and live a peaceful life. We must cooperate with each other so that we can get peace in Nepal and India as well.

Rajesh bro, it’s really a good job,*** truth is truth*** keep it up***. You can do lot of things to our country by your cartoons. Please don’t be discouraged by any means. Comment from the Gopal Baglay worth less. India tries to take a benefit of our weakness and our political instabilities. It’s your job to respond to them.
    Thanks Rajesh bro
